Government to Recover GH¢58 Million Spent on Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup Campaign – Ato Forson

The Government of Ghana will recover GH¢58 million spent on the Black Stars’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced.

Dr. Ato Forson made the announcement while presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament. He said the move forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen fiscal discipline and improve accountability in the management of public funds.

According to the Finance Minister, the government provided the funds to support Ghana’s participation in the recently concluded FIFA World Cup. He said the state will recover the amount as part of measures to ensure responsible use of taxpayer resources.

Dr. Ato Forson did not explain how the recovery process would work. He also did not provide a timeline for reclaiming the funds.

The announcement has renewed discussions about public financing for Ghana’s national football teams. Many Ghanaians have consistently called for greater transparency in sports expenditure, especially during major international tournaments.

Governments have traditionally supported the Black Stars at the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup. Those allocations often attract public scrutiny because they involve significant public expenditure.

Governance experts say stronger financial oversight can improve accountability in sports administration. They also believe transparent reporting helps build public confidence in the management of state resources.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) had not publicly issued a detailed response to the Finance Minister’s remarks at the time of publication.

The government’s latest position reflects its wider agenda to strengthen public financial management across all sectors. Officials say stronger oversight will help improve efficiency and protect public funds.

Parliament is expected to continue debating the Mid-Year Budget Review in the coming days. Members may seek additional details on the proposed recovery process and the legal framework that will guide the exercise.

The Finance Minister’s announcement is likely to fuel further debate about the financing of national teams and the accountability measures governing public spending on sports.

For now, the government maintains that it will recover the GH¢58 million spent on the Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup campaign. More information is expected as Parliament continues its deliberations.
