Dangote Secures $2.5 Billion Investment to Expand Africa’s Largest Oil Refinery

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has secured $2.5 billion in new private equity funding to support the expansion of Africa’s largest oil refinery, marking one of the continent’s biggest private investment deals in recent years.

The company announced that the fresh capital will finance the next phase of development at its integrated refinery and petrochemical complex in Lekki, Lagos. Company officials said the investment also strengthens the refinery’s financial position as it prepares for future growth.

According to Dangote Petroleum Refinery, the transaction represents the largest publicly disclosed private equity placement completed by an African company. The funding attracted support from a group of African and international institutional investors.

The refinery currently processes up to 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day, making it the largest single-train refinery in Africa. The company plans to increase that capacity to about 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028, subject to project milestones and operational requirements.

Dangote said the expansion will increase the production of refined petroleum products and petrochemicals. The company expects the additional capacity to strengthen fuel supplies across Nigeria and support exports to other African markets.

The refinery has played a growing role in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector since commencing commercial operations. Industry analysts say increased domestic refining capacity has reduced the country’s dependence on imported refined fuel while improving regional supply chains.

The latest investment comes as Dangote continues to expand its presence in Africa’s energy sector. The company has also outlined plans to pursue additional refining projects and explore new investment opportunities in other African countries.

Market observers view the successful fundraising as a sign of continued investor confidence in large-scale infrastructure projects across the continent. They also note that energy investments remain critical to supporting industrial growth and improving energy security in Africa.

The fundraising also comes ahead of a planned initial public offering (IPO), which the company has previously indicated could rank among the largest corporate listings in Africa if it proceeds as expected.

Energy experts say expanding refining capacity could help African countries reduce fuel import costs, improve supply reliability and create additional jobs across the energy value chain. However, they note that long-term success will depend on efficient operations, stable market conditions and continued investment.

As work on the expansion moves forward, industry stakeholders will closely monitor the refinery’s progress and its impact on Nigeria’s economy, regional fuel markets and Africa’s broader energy landscape.
