Pep Guardiola Turns Down Italy Coaching Role After Manchester City Exit

By SocialVyce
July 25, 2026 2 Min Read

Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has reportedly declined an opportunity to become the next head coach of the Italy national football team, opting instead to take a break from coaching.

Multiple international media outlets report that the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) considered Guardiola as a leading candidate following changes to the national team’s technical setup. However, the Spaniard chose not to pursue the role.

According to the reports, Guardiola wants to step away from football management for the time being. He reportedly plans to spend more time with his family before deciding on his next career move.

The decision ends speculation that the former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City manager could take charge of the four-time FIFA World Cup champions.

Guardiola recently concluded a highly successful spell at Manchester City. During his time at the club, he guided City to multiple Premier League titles, domestic cup triumphs and the UEFA Champions League. His tenure established one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

Italy has been searching for a new direction after a series of disappointing international results. The federation has reportedly begun evaluating other candidates as it looks to appoint a coach capable of rebuilding the national team ahead of future competitions.

Neither Guardiola nor the Italian Football Federation had provided a detailed public statement on the reports at the time of publication. However, several reputable European media outlets have consistently reported that the Spaniard is not interested in taking the position.

Football analysts say Guardiola’s decision reflects the demanding nature of elite coaching. Many managers choose to take time away from the game after lengthy periods at top clubs before accepting another high-profile appointment.

Guardiola remains one of the most respected coaches in modern football. His tactical approach and record of success have made him a frequent target for leading clubs and national teams around the world.

Although he has ruled out the Italy job, speculation about Guardiola’s future is likely to continue. Supporters and football observers expect interest from several major teams whenever he decides to return to management.

For now, Italy must continue its search for a new head coach, while Guardiola appears set to enjoy a break before considering his next challenge.
